Dental Sealant

D ental sealants are a protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of teeth, usually the molars, with the intention of preventing tooth decay in these teeth. Molar teeth, especially in children, often have deep grooves and fissures that trap food and debris and become a nidus for tooth decay. The basic concept of this type of dental prophylaxis is to flow the sealant into and over the grooves and pits which then blocks future tooth decay by preventing debris from getting taped in these spaces.

Ideally the sealant should be placed on the chewing surface of the 1st and 2nd molars one week after there complete eruption.

The Procedure

Easy Peasy, for both the patient and dentist. The molars are cleaned and prepared with a special solution that primes the tooth’s’ surface and readies it to accept and bond with the dental sealant. This gel solution is allowed to dry and then the sealant is applied a s a liquid which is then allowed to dry. The drying process only takes a few minutes and the sealants are complete. Sometimes your Bend Family dentist will use a light source to help speed the drying process.

Your new sealants will help prevent cavities and tooth decay by filling in potential gaps and spaces where theĀ  decay bugs like to do their dirty work. By no means are sealants a substitute for good oral hygiene and professional exams, but they definitely help prevent this preventable condition.

Before & After Dental Sealants

There is really no downside (except for cost) nor risk involving dental sealants. The question is are they mandatory? The answer is definitely no, but they would be nice and an effective aide in the fight against tooth decay :)
